General questions about Inheritance and Estate taxes are welcome. We cannot answer any questions about estate planning. This includes hypothetical questions prior to someone’s death.

New Jersey is committed to protecting the privacy of your tax information. Because traditional email is not secure, we will not be able to address specific tax account concerns. This means that we cannot give you any information about the status of your Inheritance or Estate Tax returns.

No confidential information, such as Social Security or Federal Tax Identification numbers, liability or payment amounts, dates of birth or bank account numbers should be included in your email.

8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (excluding State holidays.)

When you call about a specific account, you must provide the:

  • Decedent’s full name;
  • Decedent’s Social Security number; and
  • Decedent’s date of death.

We can only discuss the return status* or other specific issues regarding the account or returns with:

  • The executor or the administrator of the estate (or their authorized legal representative);
  • A beneficiary of the estate (or his or her representative) if the beneficiary is:
    • Entitled to share in the estate under the laws of intestacy (no will); or
    • Entitled to share under a probated will; or
    • A surviving joint tenant or designated beneficiary (but only to the extent of such persons’ legal or equitable interest in the estate).

*Return Status. The status of the return(s) may not be available from the Inheritance Tax Branch for a minimum of 45 days from the date it was filed.
