About the Director

State Fire Marshal Richard J. Mikutsky

Richard Mikutsky was appointed by Governor Philip Murphy in April 2018 as Director / State Fire Marshal of the N.J. Division of Fire Safety. The Division of Fire Safety is the State’s central fire service agency responsible for the development and enforcement of the Uniform Fire Code and implementing public education and firefighter training programs. As State Fire Marshal, Mikutsky is the lead State Fire Official in charge of enforcing State fire codes; investigating fire-related injuries, deaths, and crimes; directing fire prevention efforts; and coordinating fire suppression efforts statewide.

Prior to becoming Fire Marshal, Mikutsky served as a career firefighter for the Morristown Fire Bureau in Morristown, NJ, where he worked for more than 32 years. In 2013 he was promoted to the rank of Captain, a rank he held until his retirement in February 2018.

During his 32-year firefighting career, he held many positions on the Executive Board of the New Jersey State Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association (NJ FMBA), which is the statewide union representing approximately 5,000 career firefighters, EMTs, and dispatchers. From 2013 until his retirement in 2018, he held the position of Executive Vice President for the statewide union.  From 2004 through 2012, he also served as Trustee and Vice Chairman of the N.J Police and Firemen’s Retirement System Board of Trustees.

Rich continues to serve as a volunteer firefighter for the Liberty Corner Fire Company in Bernards Township, NJ where he lives with his wife Nancy.
