The building at 204 West State Street has maintained its architectural integrity for fifty years since being listed as a contributing structure to the National Register nomination for the "State House District." Unlike many neighboring buildings in "Pride of Lions Row" that have been converted into offices, 204 West State Street retains its original interior and historic features, including a Craftsman-style oak staircase leading to the fourth floor and several wireglass skylights. The structure boasts multiple fireplaces adorned with Trenton-made decorative tiles and firebacks. The exterior remains largely unchanged from its original construction, providing a contrast to the modern state buildings nearby. It exemplifies eclectic Victorian-era architecture with distinctive features such as "step" brickwork, a terra cotta decorative frieze, and a recessed entrance with wrought iron railings and Trenton-made tiles on the front porch. The use of brownstone, uncommon in Trenton, distinguishes Pride of Lions Row along State Street. The State House Historic District was added to the State Register in 1975 and the National Register in 1976. 204 West State Street was constructed in the 1870s and was a residence until the League of Women Voters purchased it in 1985. The League of Women Voters of New Jersey is dedicated to preserving the building so that it reflects the organization’s commitment to the state and all New Jerseyans.
The 2025 Trust grant will help fund the preparation of a Preservation Plan.
