Funding Programs Overview

The Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund provides an annual source of matching planning and capital grants from the state’s corporate business tax for historic preservation projects. If you have questions or concerns regarding your 2023 grant application, please reach out directly to NJHT staff. The Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund (2000-2012) provided matching grants for preservation planning and capital projects to stabilize, repair, restore and rehabilitate historic property.  The Historic Trust still administers open grants funded by this program. The Cultural Trust Capital Preservation Grant Program provides grants for the repair, preservation, restoration, rehabilitation and improvement of historic properties owned by organizations with a history or humanities mission. Future grant rounds will be announced. Read more about this program.

The 1772 Foundation, in cooperation with the New Jersey Historic Trust, offered matching grants of up to $15,000 for exterior preservation projects. As of 2019, the Trust and the 1772 Foundation no longer offer the small, matching grant program. Read more about this program.

The Discover NJ History License Plate Fund for Heritage Tourism provides small grants to develop and promote visitor-ready sites.  Applications are accepted year-round. Read more about this program.

The Revolving Loan Fund provides low-interest, long-term financing for the preservation, improvement, restoration, rehabilitation, and acquisition of historic properties. Applications are accepted year-round. Read more about this program.

The Emergency Grant and Loan Fund provides small grants or loans for the stabilization of historic property. Read more about this program.

The Capital Arts-Historic Locations Grant Program provides grants for construction expenses related to preservation, restoration, repair, and expansion to improve or enhance facilities. Click here to view the 2023 award recipients.
