Atlantic City Fire Station #6 & #9

Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund
Historic Site Management Grant
Grant Award: $49,999 (2024)
Grant Recipient: City of Atlantic City
County: Atlantic
Municipality: Atlantic City

Atlantic City Fire Stations #9 and #6 were built in 1907 and 1909, respectively, and have remained in continuous use as firehouses since their construction. The city’s transformation in the late-nineteenth century to a vacation destination necessitated the construction of neighborhood firehouses for maintaining the safety of an ever-increasing number of visitors. Architecturally, these two brick firehouses embody the distinctive characteristics of solidity and safety that the city wished to project while showcasing individual architect's designs. Both Fire Stations received an opinion of eligibility from the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office for associations with broad patterns of the city’s history and for distinctive early-twentieth century style of civic architecture.

The 2024 grant will help fund the preparation of Conditions Assessments and draft design development phase documents for Atlantic City Fire Stations #6 and #9.
