Central Railroad of New Jersey Main Line Corridor Historic District
Historic Site Management Grant
Grant Award: $75,000 (2022) Grant Recipient: Borough of Fanwood County: UnionMunicipality: Fanwood Borough
Constructed circa 1874, the Queen Anne-style main building of the Fanwood railroad station complex is one of the last remaining examples of Victorian railroad stations in New Jersey. The building predates the founding of the Borough and represents the physical and symbolic center of the Borough’s downtown. Built in popular Victorian Carpenter Gothic-Style, the most unique features of the station include a full width porch, steeply pitched roof, a central gable featuring decorative trim, and Gothic pointed arch windows.
Located between the modern NJ Transit platform and its parking lot, today the historic Fanwood Train Station serves as a community museum and meeting space, as well as office space for the Borough Engineer.
The 2022 Trust grant will help fund the preparation of a conditions assessment as well as construction and bid documents for preservation of the station building.
