Clarksburg Methodist Episcopal Church is the second oldest surviving Methodist church in Monmouth County. It is an example of a mid-nineteenth century, smaller sized, rural Protestant church. The church was part of the original Methodist circuit riders’ route, a group of dedicated itinerant preachers, in Monmouth County. Circuit riders provided church structure by preaching and through the distribution of sacraments to those small communities that otherwise would not have been able to afford or attract a minister. The Church’s graveyard contains plots dated between 1846 and 1995. The markers at gravesites are still legible and collectively form an archive of the names and dates of local families. Also included in the project is the Thomas Baird Homestead and St. James A.M.E. Church.

The 2023 Trust grant will help fund the creation of three ArcGIS Story Maps, historical research, updates to an existing website, identify linkages among similar organizations to reach new audiences, design and fabrication of a tri-fold brochure, training for web hosting and social media, and the creation of web-based visitor evaluation measures.

The 2021 Trust grant will help fund historical research, the development of an interpretive plan, and five interpretive signs.
