Located on Paterson’s Upper Raceway, the Ivanhoe Mill Wheelhouse is the last surviving structure (of an original ten) from the Ivanhoe Paper Company (IPC). The Ivanhoe Mill was a dominant force in Paterson’s paper-making industry from its beginnings in the 1850s and into the early 20th century when silk fibers for papermaking was supplanted by wood pulp. The mill is also notable for its association with African American industrialist Alfred Gibbs Campbell. Campbell managed the site for 35 years, eventually become a part owner of the mill. The site was converted to a hydroelectric plant after it was purchased by the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures (S.U.M.) in 1914. It was used for this purpose until 1946 when the site was purchased by the City of Paterson.

The Trust grant helped fund the preparation of construction documents and cost estimates for rehabilitation of the Ivanhoe Wheelhouse.
