Grant Recipient: Vernon Township Historic Society
County: Sussex
Municipality: Vernon Township

The Hinchman-Rickey Farm comprises five acres occupied by a frame farmhouse executed in the Greek Revival style and constructed circa 1855, a stone spring house constructed circa 1771-1796, two chicken houses, a carriage house, and a circa 1937 Wisconsin-style dairy barn, milk house and machinery shed, all of which are contributing resources within the eligible Rickey Farm Historic District. The site is surrounded by original farmland and preserved open space. The Hinchman-Rickey Farm is locally significant under Criterion A in the area of Agriculture as a well-preserved farm reflecting the “Golden Age” of dairy farming in the region from circa 1845 to 1937. The broad swath of agricultural buildings on the property speaks to how farming practices adapted to changes in the agricultural economy from the mid-eighteen to the mid-to-late-twentieth century.

The 2024 Trust grant will help fund the preparation of a Preservation Plan.
