Constructed ca. 1921 of cast-in-place concrete with rubble stone masonry exterior, the school is a rare surviving example of a two-room schoolhouse, built extensively around New Jersey from the 1880s up until the First World War. It is the only schoolhouse of this type that has been identified which is constructed of stone. Built to accommodate the growing population of the community known as the Lower Berkshire Valley, it served as a school until the mid-1960s and was later used as a community center. Many former students still reside in the area.
The 2019 Trust grant helped fund the preparation of design, construction and contract documents for the rehabilitation of Lafayette School. The 2018 Trust grant helped fund the preparation of a National Register nomination and a use and interpretive plan.
