Dr. Lewis Condict House
Capital Level II
Grant Award: $350,900 (2024) Grant Recipient: The Woman's Club of Morristown, Inc. County: MorrisMunicipality: Morristown Town
The house was constructed in 1797 by its first owner, Dr. Lewis Condict, a prominent citizen of Morristown. Condict was a physician with a successful medical practice in Morristown who was also a significant local and state politician. Overall, the house is considered one of the best examples of late eighteenth century architecture in Morristown, displaying Federal elements that would have been rare in a relatively small town such as Morristown at that time. In 1918, the Woman’s Community Club purchased the property from Dr. Condict's grandchildren and leased it to the Red Cross during World War I. The Woman’s Club of Morristown purchased the property in 1936 and began renting single rooms out for occupancy. In 1981, the residential rooms were transformed into office spaces. The Woman’s Club continues to use the second and third stories for below-market rate office space rentals and the ground floor for meetings and events. Today, the house reflects the different uses it has accommodated throughout its various periods of ownership.
The 2024 Trust grant will help fund the exterior restoration and interior rehabilitation.
