Monmouth Boat Club
Grant Award: $45,000 (2024) Grant Recipient: Borough of Red Bank County: MonmouthMunicipality: Red Bank Borough
Monmouth Boat Club and The North Shrewsbury Ice Boat and Yacht Club, which stand adjacent to one another, are the only 19th century buildings still standing along the river. This area along the riverfront is significant in respect to modern activity as the first Europeans chose this location to erect Shrewsbury Dock in 1665. It is recorded that vessels operated from Shrewsbury Dock to New York City as early as 1734, a century before the town of Red Bank was established. The Monmouth Boat Club is considered to have statewide significance.
Red Bank, New Jersey, established as a borough in 1908, boasts a rich historical significance rooted in its 19th-century origins as a commercial and manufacturing hub along the Navesink River. The borough's economic and cultural importance grew with the dredging of the river in 1845 and the construction of a railroad in 1860. Notable historic sites include the Monmouth Boat Club (1895), the Count Basie Center of the Arts (1926), and the Anthony Reckless House (1870). Despite increasing development pressures, Red Bank remains committed to preserving its historic resources.
The 2024 Trust grant will help fund updated design guidelines and an intensive level architectural survey of entire borough.
