Newark Public Library
Grant Award: $86,184 (2017) Grant Recipient: Newark Public Library County: EssexMunicipality: Newark
The Newark Public Library was constructed between 1897 and 1901 according to the designs of noted Philadelphia architects Rankin & Kellogg. The large four-story building is a good example of the Renaissance Revival style and includes a rusticated base, ornamental medallions at the second-floor level and an ornamental entablature containing a frieze illustrating various areas of knowledge. The interior includes twenty-two-foot ceilings, decorative flooring and oak wainscoting among other distinctions. This building serves as the library’s main branch within New Jersey’s largest library system.
The Trust grant helped repair cracks and displaced stones in its limestone façade.
