Grant Award: $87,728 (2021); $140,502 (2023)
Grant Recipient: The Growing Stage - Children's Theatre of New Jers
County: Morris
Municipality: Netcong Borough

The Palace Theatre in Netcong was constructed in 1919 on Ledgewood Avenue, three blocks from the town center as a multi-use commercial building including a silent movie theater, vaudeville house, and two storefronts that flanked the main entrance. Throughout the 1920s, the theatre was used for various civic and cultural events, including plays and concerts, and was an early venue for screening motion pictures. In the 1930's, the Palace Theatre began staging productions written by leading playwrights and featuring prominent Broadway actors. It remained a movie theater until the 1960s. From 1981 to 1994, the theatre was converted into a warehouse for a moving company. In 1995, the Growing Stage acquired the property, and it was listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places in 1996.

The 2023 Trust grant will help fund structural upgrades at the stage including the installation of new structural steel columns under the stage in the basement; replacement of the stage flooring; and installation of new metal circular stairs at stage left to match the existing stair at stage right. The project also includes the realignment of the existing stairs to the basement from the backstage area.

The 2021 Trust grant will help fund the construction and installation of a custom fly system to allow for the lifting and changing of stage scenery and sets; installation of new awnings over the side doors; and installation of exterior lighting.
