Plainfield Y.M.C.A. (Plainfield Civic Historic District)
Historic Site Management Grant
Grant Award: $26,250 (2024) Grant Recipient: City of Plainfield County: UnionMunicipality: Plainfield City
Constructed in 1922, the Plainfield Y.M.C.A. is a three-story Neoclassical Revival building. Like the other buildings within the Plainfield Civic Historic District, the Plainfield Y.M.C.A. was constructed as part of the City Beautiful Movement, an architectural reform philosophy which occurred during the first quarter of the twentieth century seeking to introduce grand, monumental building designs to America’s cities. A variety of brick treatments, including Flemish bond, basketweave, and varying geometric patterns is found on each elevation, even with additional decoration on the façade. The City of Plainfield purchased the site in 2022 with the intent to preserve and repurpose the building as a multifaceted community center called the Center of Excellence.
The 2024 grant will help fund the preparation of a Preservation Plan.
