Historic Site Management Grant
Grant Award: $34,290 (2024) Grant Recipient: Readington Township County: HunterdonMunicipality: Readington Township
The 26-acre Taylor's Mill Historic District is comprised of a c. 1760 grist and flour mill with its hydro-system and the cottage occupied by the miller, all of which are contributing. This complex is found in Readington Township, Hunterdon County, and is located at the intersection of Taylor's Mill Road and Rockaway Creek Road. Taylor's Mill is a stone grist mill built circa 1760 by Colonel John Taylor who owned and ran the mill. Taylor, an Englishman by birth, served in the Revolution as a member of the 4th Hunterdon Militia and eventually achieved the rank of General. This mill played an important role in the Revolution as a grain supplier for Washington’s Army and is one of the last surviving pre-Revolutionary mills. The mill complex is significant in the areas of early settlement patterns, industry, commerce, military and architecture. The Taylor’s Mill Historic District was added to both the State and National Registers of Historic Places in 1992. In 1997, the boundary was increased by 8 acres to cross the Rockaway Creek and extend into Tewksbury Township.
The 2024 Trust grant will help fund the preparation of a Preservation Plan for the Taylor’s Mill located within the Taylor’s Mill Historic District.
