Upton Log Cabin the oldest house in Gloucester Township, one of few historically intact 18th century log cabins in the entire state, and possibly one of the oldest surviving workman’s taverns in the United States. The house was built with traditional squared logs, vertically milled in a water-powered sawmill, and sits on a fieldstone foundation. The cabin is remotely located on Timber Creek, which was a major early-18th century shipping point for merchants and travelers wanting to get their goods to Philadelphia, and beyond. The earliest deed on record is from 1736 and with few exceptions the history of ownership is remarkably well documented. From the 1740s-1790s, the prominent Chew family owned the cabin and operated it as a tavern for laborers working in the area’s coal pits and merchants passing through.

The Trust grant helped fund a National Register nomination to become listed on the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places.
