The Van Houten House is an authentic example of Dutch Colonial architecture.  The original stone house, and a wood framed addition, were constructed circa 1741 by Garrebrant Van Houten.  The house remained in the Van Houten family for two generations.  It was purchased by the Society for Establishing Useful Manufacturers (S.U.M.) in 1855, along with extensive Van Houten landholdings around the Great Falls, upon the death of Adrian Van Houten, grandson to Garrebrant.  Adrian was responsible for rebuilding the original stone house of 1741 in 1831, after a fire, which the circa 1741 wood framed addition survived.

The Trust grant helped fund roof reconstruction due to a recent fire, structural stabilization work, primarily restoration of the exterior envelope and interior repairs, including some mold remediation.
