West Jersey Depot Train Station (Glassboro Train Station)

Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund
Grant Award: $7,500 (2018)
Grant Recipient: Glassboro Historic Preservation Commission
County: Gloucester
Municipality: Glassboro

Constructed ca.1867, the Glassboro Train Station is a strong example of train depot architecture. The train station played an integral role in the development of Glassboro, fueling local industry and higher education. Trainlines not only carried materials to and finished products from Glassboro’s famed glass industry, but also carried students to and from the Glassboro Normal School. By 1978, passenger and freight lines were discontinued. The station, vacant and deteriorating, was under private ownership until it was purchased by the Borough in 2005 and restored in 2015.

The Trust grant helped fund the preparation of a nomination for listing in both the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places.
