Willowwood Arboretum is an excellent intact example of a designed landscape completed by amateur horticulturalists Robert and Henry Tubbs who were influenced by the Country Place Era and the Arts and Crafts Movements. The brothers were later assisted by Dr. Benjamin Blackburn who they first met in 1936. The period of significance begins in 1908, the year the Tubbs family purchased the property and extends until circa 1975 to recognize Dr. Benjamin Blackburn's later contributions to the landscape with the circa 1960s Rosarie and the circa 1975 Rockery.  When Robert and Henry Tubbs bought the 135-acre former farm in 1908, the property included the c. 1790 main house, carriage house, a c. 1790 stone barn, a wood frame barn, a smoke house, and a c. 1823 stone cottage. The brothers remodeled and enlarged the main house and later added a Lord and Burnham Conservatory in 1930. The former farm was transformed into a country estate with designed gardens and over 3,500 plant species. An integral part of the design is the unity of the house and gardens.

The 2024 Trust grant will help fund the preparation of a National Register nomination.
