The Brearley House is a rare surviving example of a farmhouse built in the vernacular Georgian style, constructed by one of the early settlers of Maidenhead, now known as Lawrenceville. Glazed brick headers form the date of construction in one of the gable ends, a custom more often seen in southern New Jersey­. Also significant is the house’s extensive eighteenth century woodwork, including the staircase, fireplaces, and paneling.

The 2024 Trust grant will help fund interior and exterior improvements, including drainage remediation, and masonry, plaster, and sill repair. 

The 1997 grant funded replacement of a temporary fiberglass shingle roof with wood shingles, replacement of sash windows, installation of shutters, and restoration of interior finishes. Structural repairs, new mechanical systems, and a small addition to provide barrier-free accessibility were also accomplished. Brearley House is the centerpiece of a nature reserve and hosts educational programs on the area’s history and environment.
