Major John Burrowes Mansion

Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund
Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Grant Award: $130,126 (1993); $149,358 (2016)
Grant Recipient: Borough of Matawan
County: Monmouth
Municipality: Matawan

The Mansion was constructed in 1723 in the Georgian style, with a late 18th-century addition. The exterior features unique hand-scalloped wooden shingle siding and was the home of Major Burrowes and his family during the American Revolution. The first New Jersey Company of the Continental Army was formed on the property, which the borough acquired and allows the historical society to utilize for its events and exhibits.

The Trust grant would help fund the replacement of part of the wood shake roof, repair windows, shutters, siding and trim, exterior painting and structural reinforcement of interior floors. A previous Trust grant helped fund structural repairs and replacement of deteriorated roofing and siding.
