The Cathedral, constructed between 1860-1898, is a fine high-style Gothic design by New Jersey architect Jeremiah O'Rourke. A prominent landmark in its downtown location, the Cathedral is an enduring and inspiring symbol of the Diocesan presence in the city. The church became the cathedral for the Diocese of Camden in 1937 and is the symbolic physical and spiritual center of the Diocese.

The 2002 matching grant helped fund the exterior repair and restoration, including brownstone consolidation and replacement, repairs to deteriorated stained glass windows, and tower masonry repointing and frames as well as new window protection. The grant contributed to a $2.5 million construction project.

The 2001 Historic Site Management grant helped fund preparation of a National Register nomination and a preservation plan that addressed the condition of deteriorating brownstone details, the slate roof, corner tower and stained glass windows.
