Cedar Bridge Tavern
Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Grant Award: $49,500 (2009); $150,000 (2016) Grant Recipient: Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission County: OceanMunicipality: Barnegat Township
The Cedar Bridge Tavern was constructed c. 1775 by John Middleton, Jr. and retains good integrity, including a rare early 19th-century bar from when the building served as a tavern. The property may also be the site of one of the last land engagements of the Revolutionary War. The building was situated on a stagecoach road that was bypassed by later roads, which probably contributed to the resource’s longevity. Acquired by the county in 2007, the current resident has life tenancy.
The Trust grant would help fund exterior rehabilitation including roof, windows, doors, cedar siding, framing, foundation walls, and removal of non-historic features. The work is based on the recommendations of a preservation plan that was funded by a previous Trust grant.
