Abel and Mary Nicholson House

Cultural Trust Historic Preservation Grants
Grant Award: $15,000
Grant Recipient: Salem Old House Foundation
County: Salem
Municipality: Elsinboro
The Nicholson House is an extraordinarily intact example of the eighteenth century patterned brick house, distinctive for the checkerboard patterned brick on three elevations, and a diamond-patterned east elevation with "1722" at the gable peak. The house has not been modified to accommodate heat or electricity, and retains a high level of integrity. Moreover, the house and its site are noteworthy for their associations with a prominent local family and the Quaker settlement in Salem.

The Trust grant will help fund repointing the bedding mortar on the diamond-patterned end of the house and stabilize the chimneys. This work will prevent further deterioration of the house’s unique brickwork.
