Cape May Historic District: Cape Island Presbyterian Church

Cultural Trust Historic Preservation Grant
Grant Award: $50,000 (2007)
Grant Recipient: Cape May Stage Playhouse
County: Cape May
Municipality: Cape May

The building, constructed in 1853 as the Cape Island Presbyterian Church, is a locally known landmark in the center of town. It has also housed an Episcopal congregation and, during the second half of the twentieth century, the city of Cape May's community and visitor center. In 1994 the Cape May Stage Playhouse began using the space. The theater now hosts numerous theatrical productions and educational activities throughout the year.

The building exemplifies local carpenter-designed architecture and has good integrity. It includes Greek Revival-style elements as well as a unique belvedere. The recently restored exterior and rehabilitated entrance vestibule are in excellent condition.

The 2007 grant helped fund restoration of the interior ceiling, walls, and floor.
