Cavalry Cottage

Cultural Trust Historic Preservation Grants
Grant Award: $15,000
Grant Recipient: Stafford Township Historical Society
County: Ocean
Municipality: Stafford Township
Cavalry Cottage may be the oldest extant building in the township, associated with Brig. General William Grier, cavalry veteran of the Mexican and Civil Wars.  Grier spent ten years in Stafford developing speculative real estate deals for residences and roads that would serve the expanding resort industry.  In 1874, their company donated a large plot of land adjacent to the cottage for a new Methodist Church.

The grant-funded work included the demolition of a 20th century porch and dormers that helped to restore the structure's original appearance.
