The 20th century hospital buildings on Ellis Island were constructed at the turn of the 20th century to treat newly arriving immigrants.  Of the 12 million immigrants processed on the island, 1.2 million were kept and treated in the hospital. The laundry building served the other hospital buildings as a laundry, morgue and nurses' residence. 

The grant will help fund restoration of interior finishes in the main exhibit room, in preparation for the opening of the building to the public.
