Greenwood Gardens

Cultural Trust Historic Preservation Grants
Grant Award: $50,000
Grant Recipient: Greenwood Gardens
County: Essex
Municipality: Short Hills
Greenwood Gardens is unusual for its early-20th century arts and crafts features and pavilions. The gardens were designed by William Whetten Renwick in an Italian garden style, with water cascades, terraced gardens, and organizing axis. The site was built as a private residence and donated to Greenwood Gardens, which is restoring and interpreting the gardens, nature and history.  In addition to the main residence, the property contains a tennis house, tennis loggia, greenhouse, tea house, and summer house.

The current grant will help fund the creation of two restrooms, including one that is handicapped accessible, in the main house that will be used as a visitors’ center when the property is regularly open to the public.
