Old Franklin Schoolhouse

Cultural Trust Capital Preservation Grant
Grant Award: $10,000 (2012)
Grant Recipient: Borough Improvement League of Metuchen
County: Middlesex
Municipality: Metuchen

Initially constructed in 1807 as a simple braced-frame building and later remodeled with Greek Revival embellishments in 1842, the Old Franklin Schoolhouse is a fine local example of Federal/Greek Revival architecture representing the 19th century educational history of Metuchen.  In addition, the schoolhouse is associated with the Borough Improvement League as community center.

The schoolhouse was Metuchen’s first school and had fallen into disrepair following its retirement from public service in the 1870s.  Many of the founding members of the Borough Improvement League had attended school in the building and in 1901 purchased the building to ensure its continued use as a community function and meeting space.

The 2012 grant will help fund exterior repairs and stabilization.
