Oswald J. Nitschke House

Cultural Trust Capital Preservation Grant
Grant Award: $50,000 (2012)
Grant Recipient: Kenilworth Historical Society
County: Union
Municipality: Kenilworth

Constructed c. 1880 as a wood frame farmhouse, this house was occupied by Oswald J. Nitschke, a three-term mayor who supported Kenilworth's incorporation in 1907. The building’s evolution shows the changes and immigrant influences during the early development of the area. The house was saved in 2003 when the Kenilworth Historical Society moved the building 1,500 feet to prevent its demolition due to commercial development.  The exterior was restored in 2008.

The 2012 grant will help fund the restoration of damaged interior finishes and features on the second floor in preparation for the house opening as a museum.
