The Jacobus Vanderveer House is historically significant as the last remaining site in Somerset County to have been associated with the locally prominent Vanderveer family. The house, constructed by Jacobus Vanderveer probably during the 1770s, was standing during the nearby Pluckemin encampment (1778-1779). The main house is architecturally significant as a fine example of a pre-Revolutionary War, Dutch frame dwelling with an early 19th century Federal style addition constructed between 1813 and 1833.

The Township of Bedminster acquired the property in 1989. Ten years later, the Friends of the Jacobus Vanderveer House entered into a twenty-five year lease agreement with the township. Since that time, the main house has been fully restored and the Friends are planning for furnishings and interpretation.

The 2006 grant helped fund the construction of a handicapped accessible ramp and a barrier free toilet facility in the reconstructed kitchen wing. These improvements will enable all visitors to access the first floor of the historic building.
