The schoolhouse, constructed in 1872-73 and enlarged ten years later, is the State’s longest continuously operating school building. The exterior maintains good architectural integrity, though it has lost some of its Victorian-era trim. The interior classrooms and offices are functional spaces for a working school and have layers of 20th century finishes.
The 2008 Trust grant helped fund the stabilization and exterior restoration of the school, including sill repairs, masonry repointing, restoration of clapboard siding and original windows, and painting the school in late 19th century colors. The work was recommended in a preservation plan that was prepared with a previous Trust grant.
A 2024 Trust grant will help fund the preparation of an updated Preservation Plan including a Phase IA archaeological assessment.
