The Dr. Floyd L. Moreland Carousel (also known as the Dentzel/Looff Carousel) was moved to its current home in Seaside Heights in 1932 from Burlington Island in Burlington County, NJ. A precise date of construction is unknown, however, most of the carousel animals date to 1910. The oldest carousel animals were carved in the 1890s. That would place the Moreland Carousel in the somewhat debated “golden age” of carousels and amusement parks, which ranges from 1875 to 1935. Wooden carousels are becoming increasingly rare—in the 1920s there were 30 in the state. By 1974 there were 15 statewide. Today, only 4 remain.

The Trust grant helped fund restoration of the carousel’s mechanical and electrical systems, and restoration of the carousel figures, facades, and decorative elements.
