Evergreen Cemetery was established in 1853 and is one of the earliest and most intact examples of the Rural Cemetery movement in the region. The original design and initial expansion design were by Ernest Meyer, and the later expansion design was by William and Clifton Luster. The cemetery is also notable for those interred there, including a large Gypsy population and the author Stephen Crane.

The Trust grant would help fund the stabilization, repair, and restoration of the historic iron fencing and masonry piers along one side of the cemetery property. A 2009 grant helped fund the preparation of a comprehensive cultural resource master plan.
