Fickens Warehouse

Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund
Historic Site Management
Grant Award: $50,000 (2021)
Grant Recipient: City of Jersey City
County: Hudson
Municipality: Jersey City

The Fickens Warehouse was erected circa 1910 in the Neo-Classical/Second Renaissance Style. Listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, it serves as the reference property for this grant application for a municipal planning project, the scope of which includes all of Ward F of the City of Jersey City. Ward F has a number of historic sites and buildings associated with diverse aspects of the City’s history, spanning from the American Revolution to the age of industrialization. In addition to Ficken’s Warehouse, the proposed scope of work will increase public understanding of Ward F sites including but not limited to St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church Complex, the Bergen Hill Historic District, St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Communipaw-Lafayette Historic District, Whitlock Cordage, the former Jersey City Medical Center, the Martin Luther King Drive corridor, the Monticello Ave Commercial corridor, the state-owned buildings within Liberty State Park, and additional resources not identified in previous studies.

The Trust grant will help fund a reconnaissance-level cultural resources survey of Ward F, or a portion thereof, in Jersey City.
