Grant Award: $17,993 (2001); $199,797(2004); $750,000 (2006) Grant Recipient: Center for Community Arts County: Cape MayMunicipality: Cape May
The Franklin Street School is significant for its associations with Cape May’s African American community and part of the Cape May National Landmark Historic District. The building is now leased by the municipality to the Center for Community Arts. Since leasing the building, the Center has stabilized the building and made significant improvements to its overall condition. When completed, the building will house a community arts center.
The current grant will help fund the completion of the second phase and entire third phase of building restoration. Work consists of reinforcing structural framing, brick masonry restoration, wood window repairs, interior finishes, and mechanical and electrical upgrades. Previous Trust grants helped to fund the removal of mold and asbestos contamination from the building and the preparation of a preservation plan that is guiding the current work.
