General John Frelinghuysen House

New Jersey Historic Preservation Bond Program
Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Capital Preservation Grant Level II
Grant Award: $31,283 (1993), $264,075 (2008)
Grant Recipient: Raritan Public Library
County: Somerset
Municipality: Raritan
The c.1801 house is associated with General John Frelinghuysen and his descendents who were one of the area’s most prominent founding families. The house was donated to the borough for library use in 1970 and retains good integrity of its 19th century interior finishes and exterior appearance and serves as an active community library.

The current Trust grant will help fund exterior restoration of doors, window, trim, and porch, and replacement of the asphalt roof with historically appropriate wood shingles.

A previous Trust grant funded structural repairs and conservation of deteriorated brickwork, the first phase of the library expansion needed to relieve the historic house of the heavy use it currently receives. All work was guided by a historic structure report also funded by the grant.
