Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church

New Jersey Historic Preservation Bond Program
Grant Award: $482,049 (1995)
Grant Recipient: Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church
County: Essex
Municipality: Montclair Township

Designed in the Italian Renaissance Revival style by William Schickel, Immaculate Conception Church was modeled after St. Paul's Outside the Walls Church in Rome. Completed in 1908, the church features a bell tower, an ornate loggia, and exquisite classical details executed in terra cotta and limestone. In addition to daily worship services, the church supports many social outreach programs and community social events, such as the Montclair "First Night" festivities.

The 1995 Trust grant helped fund exterior restoration of the church, including repair and replacement of brick, stone, terra cotta, and clay tile roofing.
