Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund
Capital Level I
Grant Award: $60,000 (2021)
Grant Recipient: Township of Berkeley Heights
County: Union
Municipality: Berkeley Heights Township

The Littel-Lord Farmstead currently consists of approximately eighteen-acres with the following historic buildings: Littel-Lord house dating to 1760 with additions in 1870 and 1920; the Lord House dating to 1870; a spring house from 1760; a summer kitchen from 1870; a 1900 privy; and 1913 pump house. The Littel-Lord house was constructed by Andrew Littel a sheep farmer and weaver. The earliest section of the house exhibits Anglo-Dutch framing techniques. Mary Ann Lord acquired the property in 1867 and subsequently made alterations to the house in 1870 and again in 1920. Berkley Heights Township acquired the property during the mid-1970’s with Green Acres funding to protect the property from a planned subdivision. The Berkley Heights Historical Society helped save it from demolition and then opened a local history museum in the house

The Trust grant will help fund structural repairs to the foundation and wood framing associated with the nineteenth century ell addition. The project also includes archaeological investigations associated with ground disturbing activities.
