Morris Canal Park
Historic Site Management Grant
Grant Award: $35,900 (2004) Grant Recipient: Borough of West Paterson County: PassaicMunicipality: West Paterson
The Morris Canal, begun in 1824, is an important historic landscape feature running through the middle of West Paterson. The canal system reached its peak of use during the Civil War, predominantly serving the transportation of coal and iron.
The grant will assist the preparation of a conditions assessment, archaeology, and conceptual design of the canal and towpath. The funded studies will guide the restoration of the canal and conversion to a municipal park, linking this section of the canal with other preservation activities elsewhere along the canal.
