Historic Site Management
Grant Award: $23,738 (2019) Grant Recipient: Morris County Park Commission County: MorrisMunicipality: Rockaway Township
The Mount Hope Miners’ Church was constructed in 1868 by the Mount Hope Mining Company for use by its employees and their families. A schoolhouse basement-level addition was constructed by the Mining Company circa 1870 and used for about 15 years before construction of a new school forced the church schoolhouse to close. The church was suppressed in 1984 and has not operated as an active house of worship since that time. The building is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places for its association with the mining company and as a good example of a rural church in the Italianate style.
The Trust 2019 grant funded the preparation of design and contract documents for the installation of the schoolhouse addition as well as an archaeological assessment.
