Newark Day Center

New Jersey Historic Preservation Bond Program
Grant Award: $205,015 (1995)
Grant Recipient: Newark Day Center
County: Essex
Municipality: Newark City

This 1886 structure is the headquarters of the Newark Day Center, known formerly as the Newark Female Charitable Society and the oldest social agency in New Jersey. The building itself is a distinctive example of the Romanesque Revival style.

The Center currently provides day care for 180 children as well as senior care, parent and employment education, and other social service programs. It is also the lead agency for a collaborative initiative, and provides administration and childcare consulting services.

The Trust grant helped funded the rehabilitation of the much-neglected exterior of the building, including roofing repairs, masonry cleaning and repointing, window repairs, and exterior paintwork.
