The Newark Board of Education in consultation with the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office commissioned a study in 2002 of Newark Public Schools. The study determined that approximately 23 schools in Newark are eligible for listing on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places.

The 2021 Trust grant will help fund the completion of a New Jersey and National Register nomination for Weequahic High School. The 2010 Trust grant helped fund the preparation of New Jersey and National Register nominations for six Newark Public School buildings.
