Old Bergen Church of Jersey City
Grant Award: $540,620 (1997) Grant Recipient: Old Bergen Church of Jersey City County: HudsonMunicipality: Jersey City
Old Bergen Church of Jersey City is home to what most historians consider the oldest continuing religious congregation in New Jersey. The existing church stands on the site of the original 1680 church and a later 1773 church building. The existing brownstone sanctuary was constructed in 1841 in the Greek Revival style, incorporating materials from both of the earlier churches.
The Trust grant helped fund repairs to the deteriorating brownstone, roof replacement, restoration of the exterior trim, repair of the belfry, and lightning protection. The congregation of Old Bergen plans to restore the church to its earliest documented appearance.
