The Phoenix House was built in 1810 (HABS estimates the date of construction to be slightly earlier) potentially as a women’s seminary. The building was soon purchased in 1820 by William Phoenix who operated the building as an inn. The Greek Revival portico was added circa 1840 to entice travelers passing through Mendham. The building later became an antique store until it was purchased by the borough in 1938. The Phoenix House has operated as Mendham Borough Hall since that time. The Phoenix House is a key-contributing resource to the Mendham Historic District and is significant as an outstanding example of the Federal style.

The 2023 Trust grant will help fund the exterior restoration of the Phoenix House.

The 2021 Trust grant will help fund structural stabilization. The 2020 Trust grant will help fund the preparation of design and contract documents to address structural deficiencies and exterior repairs. The 2002 Trust grant helped fund the preservation of the building, improvement of mechanical systems and creation of barrier-free access. The 2001 Trust grant helped fund the preparation of a preservation plan, a structural assessment, and design and construction documents for a limited-scope capital project.
