The Tudor country home of Winthrop and Alice Morton Rutherfurd, built in 1902-04 represents the country life movement that swept the nation following the Civil War, when wealthy Americans began to construct large houses on the most attractive and exclusive properties near major cities and in resort enclaves. The estate included an early hydroelectric powerhouse drawing from a pond, a 9-hole golf course, kennels for Rutherfurd’s Scotch Terriers, gardens, a boathouse, and a swimming beach. The landscape was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted & Sons, and the interior woodwork, fireplaces, ceilings, and original furnishings from the Rutherfurd Family echo Jacobean-style themes, and English style that followed the Tudor period.

Much of the land surrounding Rutherfurd Hall is under State ownership (Allamuchy Mountain State Park). The 2021 Trust grant will help fund the construction of ADA accessible bathrooms. The 2012 Trust grant helped fund the preparation of a preservation plan, lake management plan, and landscape plan that will guide future restoration and site improvements.
