Sacred Heart Church

Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Capital Preservation Grant, Level II
Grant Award: $282,953 (2002)
Grant Recipient: Sacred Heart Church
County: Mercer
Municipality: Trenton

This outstanding 1880s Romanesque Church designed by popular Catholic Church architect Patrick Keely is part of a five-building complex and is a prominent community landmark. Sacred Heart is the oldest Catholic parish in New Jersey, inheriting the history and traditions of an earlier church that was destroyed by fire. Sacred Heart is moving forward with a million dollar restoration campaign.

The 2002 Trust grant helped fund an accessible entry, stabilization and restoration of the distinctive bell towers, and repairs to exterior finishes and the roof.
