Sergeantsville Hotel

Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Historic Site Management Grant
Grant Award: $28,538 (2009)
Grant Recipient: Delaware Township
County: Hunterdon
Municipality: Delaware Township

This hotel/tavern was constructed in 1830 as a substantial five-bay stone building with wood trim. Expanded in the late 19th century, the hotel later served as a meeting place and housed commercial business. Today it remains a highly visible landmark in the community, located at a key intersection. It was acquired by the township for its municipal offices in 1974, at which time the wrap-around porch and stucco cladding was removed. The interior retains good integrity of windows and finishes.

The grant helped fund the preparation of a preservation plan that assessed current conditions and made recommendations for future repair and rehabilitation. Under consideration is the opportunity to reconstruct the original porch and provide an accessible entrance.
