The façade of the South Park Presbyterian Church is a prominent landmark on the drive into downtown Newark from the south. The church is notable for hosting Abraham Lincoln as a speaker in 1861. The majority of the church was destroyed by fire in 1992, and only the stone front and flanking towers survived.
The 2006 grant helped fund the first phase of restoration of the remaining architecture as a gateway to a planned cultural district that will include a park, outdoor performance space, and museum of African American music. The 2010 grant continues the stabilization work. The project is guided by an assessment previously funded by the Trust.
